Our Purpose
The Public Domain Literature Library is an independent catalogue devoted to making classic works of literature, history, and thought accessible to readers around the world. We believe that the great writings of the past—novels, poems, essays, and manuscripts—belong to everyone, and that careful presentation and context can deepen a reader's understanding and enjoyment.
How the Catalogue Works
Each catalogue entry includes bibliographic information and identifies the source digital edition. The book page links to its Project Gutenberg source record, where available reading and download formats are provided by Project Gutenberg. This Catalogue maintenance uses source records and bibliographic context.
Organisation and Categories
To help you find works that interest you, we have arranged the catalogue into thematic categories. These include Adventure Picaresque Fiction, Fantasy Juvenile Worlds, Utopias Future Societies Other Worlds, and Historical Psychological Social Fiction. Each category brings together related titles and often includes a short introductory note explaining the grouping. For example, under Sea Voyages you might find firsthand accounts of maritime disasters alongside fictional tales of survival, offering multiple viewpoints on the same human experience.
Reading Notes and Context
Many catalogue entries are accompanied by reading notes—short essays or commentaries that we call Key Ideas to Explore, Context and Discussion, A Reader’s Guide, or similar. These are not exhaustive literary analyses but rather invitations to think more deeply about the work. For instance, a note on The Plumed Serpent — A Closer Reading might examine D. H. Lawrence’s treatment of myth and revolution, while Benighted — Context and Discussion could explore the Gothic elements in the novel that inspired the film The Old Dark House. We also provide Edition Insights for certain titles, explaining textual variations or the history of a particular edition.
Metadata Review
We take care to verify basic metadata—author name, title, publication date, and language—against authoritative sources. However, because many public-domain texts have been digitised from physical copies with missing or inconsistent title pages, we cannot guarantee that every detail is perfectly accurate. Where we are aware of discrepancies, we note them in the entry.
Correction Handling
If you notice an error in a catalogue entry or have additional information about a work, we welcome your feedback. Please contact us at the address provided on our Contact page. We review each suggestion carefully and update entries as needed. Our goal is to maintain a reliable resource, and we appreciate the help of attentive readers.
Responsible Access to Historical Works
The books in this catalogue were written in their own historical contexts and may contain language, attitudes, or depictions that are outdated or offensive. We present these works as historical documents, without alteration, because we believe that understanding the past—including its flaws—is essential. We do not endorse any prejudiced views that may appear. Reading notes sometimes address these issues directly, offering context to help readers approach the text critically.
A Note on Public Domain Status
We strive to include only works that are in the public domain in their country of origin and in Canada, where the catalogue project is based. Copyright laws vary by jurisdiction, and a work that is free in one country may still be protected in another. It is your responsibility to confirm the legal status of a work before downloading it. We cannot guarantee that every title is in the public domain worldwide.
What We Do Not Do
We do not sell books, host advertisements, or collect personal data beyond what is necessary to respond to inquiries. We are not affiliated with any publisher, university, or institution. Our catalogue is a volunteer effort driven by a love of literature and a commitment to open access.
Editorial responsibility
